Massie Elevates a Tragedy Foreign Networks Already Weaponized
Jewish Onliner ran a deep dive into the conspiracy ecosystem around the USS Liberty — where Massie’s rhetoric meets Iranian influence campaigns, state media propaganda, and antisemitic mythmaking.
In an age when grotesque libels about Jews and Israel spread with alarming speed, data-driven research matters more than ever. If you find our work valuable, please consider becoming a paid subscriber.
There are tragedies that stay in public memory because the facts still demand mourning. And then there are tragedies that keep returning because someone has found a new use for them. The 1967 attack on the USS Liberty should belong firmly in the first category: real, devastating, and worthy of remembrance.
But what Rep. Thomas Massie brought to the House floor this week was not simple remembrance. It was the reactivation of a political narrative that has been circulating for years through anti-Israel propaganda channels, foreign influence campaigns, and antisemitic conspiracy ecosystems.
The intervention came after Massie’s primary defeat, which was fueled in part by considerable pro-Israel spending in favor of his challenger. A Jewish Onliner review found no evidence that Massie had raised the incident through legislation, resolutions, hearings, statements, or other official congressional action during his 13 years in office.
On the anniversary of the USS Liberty attack, Massie did not merely invoke the 34 Americans killed and more than 170 wounded when Israeli forces mistakenly struck the U.S. Navy ship during the Six-Day War. He used their deaths to advance allegations that the attack was “intentional murder,” a possible “false flag operation,” or an effort to keep the United States from seeing what Israel was doing that day.
That is not the conclusion reached by the official record.
What the Official Record Actually Says
The USS Liberty incident has been examined through a commonly cited set of 13 U.S. and Israeli inquiries, reviews, and reports, 10 American and three Israeli. While several criticized Israel’s conduct as reckless or grossly negligent, they did not substantiate the claim that Israel intentionally attacked a ship it knew was American.
A CIA intelligence memorandum published in the State Department’s FRUS collection said intercepted communications left “little doubt” that Israeli units failed to identify the Liberty as a U.S. ship before or during the attack.

Likewise, the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board chairman Clark Clifford found no evidence the attack was intentional. The underlying Clifford memorandum is deeply critical of Israeli conduct, calling the episode a “flagrant act of gross negligence” and describing the failures as “gross and inexcusable.” But it still concluded that the evidence did not show a premeditated attack by Israeli high command on a ship known to be American.

That distinction matters. The Liberty tragedy has long been used by conspiracy movements not merely to condemn Israel, but to imply something broader: that Israel can kill Americans, escape consequences, and suppress the truth because Washington is controlled by Israel, Zionists, or Jews.
And that is not a fringe reading of how the Liberty now functions online.
How the Liberty Narrative Now Functions Online
A Jewish Onliner review of X posts between June 8, 2025 and June 8, 2026 found that the USS Liberty was explicitly mentioned in roughly 1.3 million posts, generating about 9 million interactions and roughly 16 billion potential views.
Within that conversation, 7.3 percent of posts also mentioned Ben Shapiro, often in an effort to bait a prominent Jewish public figure into relitigating the attack. Another 9.9 percent mentioned Jeffrey Epstein, folding the Liberty into a larger story about hidden Jewish or Israeli criminal power. And 15.3 percent mentioned JFK, invoking the familiar claim that Israel was behind the Kennedy assassination as well. That is not what remembrance looks like. It is what weaponization looks like.
Foreign actors have understood the value of that wedge for years.
How Iranian-Linked Networks Turned It into a Campaign
In 2021, the Digital Forensic Research Lab documented an Iran-linked campaign tied to Ali Akbar Raefipour’s Masaf Institute that pushed #USSLiberty into American discourse. According to DFRLab, the campaign generated more than 2.37 million impressions, used the hashtag more than 103,000 times across June, and was coordinated through Telegram as an “Operation hashtag: #USSLiberty.” After the launch time, more than 2,150 Iranian accounts tweeted the hashtag nearly 27,000 times.
The Masaf Telegram archive was explicit about the goal. It described the campaign as an effort to bring the message to Americans, claimed that “Zionist media control” had kept the story buried, and framed the incident as proof that Israel would not even spare the United States when its own interests were at stake. The point was not to illuminate history. It was to turn history into a conspiracy about hidden Jewish power.

Iranian Conference Featuring Aleksandr Dugin
The same pattern appeared inside Iran’s wider anti-Western influence ecosystem. The 2018 New Horizon conference program placed “Israel’s Attack on USS Liberty” inside a session titled “The Costs of America’s Support for Israel,” alongside themes involving 9/11, JFK, and Israeli influence over American decision-making.
The same program elsewhere listed Russian ultranationalist ideologue Aleksandr Dugin as a moderator, placing the Liberty session within a wider conference ecosystem built around anti-Western and conspiracist narratives.
The conference was not just anti-Israel. It was a venue where anti-Israel narratives were fused with the broader conspiracist worldview of authoritarian propaganda. When the U.S. Treasury later sanctioned New Horizon, it said the organization’s conferences served as a platform for IRGC-Qods Force recruitment and intelligence collection while propagating antisemitism, Holocaust denial, and conspiracy theories.
How State-Run Media Amplifies the Story
The Liberty narrative also moved through openly state propaganda. Iran’s state-run Press TV hosted Phil Tourney directly as a “special guest,” identified him as a former U.S. Navy petty officer and USS Liberty survivor.

A related Press TV page highlighted how Tourney is on record declaring that “Israel controls us. They control the Congress. They control the Senate. They control our money. We don’t control our country. The Zionist state does.” By that point, the Liberty was not being used as a historical case study. It was being used as a gateway into an all-purpose theory of Jewish or Israeli control.
That framing was not confined to Iranian outlets. In 2014, Qatar’s Al Jazeera aired The Day Israel Attacked America, and the filmmaker’s note on the network’s own page says Al Jazeera commissioned the film after “careful consideration.” Director Richard Belfield wrote that introductions to Liberty survivors “would prove invaluable as we began filming interviews,” and added plainly: “The veterans were extraordinary.” Whatever one makes of the documentary itself, it was not some accidental acquisition. It was a commissioned project built around survivor testimony and the enduring political usefulness of the Liberty frame.
What the Liberty Narrative Is Really Selling
The tragedy of the USS Liberty deserves remembrance. But remembrance is not what conspiracy networks are selling. They are selling a story in which Israel controls America, Americans are powerless, and Jewish influence explains why the truth is supposedly hidden.
That is why the Liberty narrative keeps returning. It is not only about 1967. It is a ready-made wedge issue for anyone trying to fracture the U.S.-Israel alliance from within.

Cam Higby's interview with Captain Phil of the Liberty is remarkable for it shows the entity behind the fairy tale that has been manifest enabling Baja from Massey and other defective dud manginas
Captain Phil said the interior of the Liberty was festooned with Israeli flags to show solidarity with their close Ally, sounds like that would violate some Navy protocol and America was not a close Ally until after Israel emerged victorious from the 6-day war when America was spying on it transmitting the information to Britain who is giving it to Egypt as explained in John loftus's book The secret war against the Jews.
This makes me glad he's gone.
