Israel Delivers World’s First Operational High-Power Laser Defense System
Israel's Iron Beam becomes world's first operational high-power laser weapon as the nation's defense-tech stocks surge to record highs.
Israel's Iron Beam laser interception system is now fully operational following its December 2025 handover to the IDF, marking what Defense Minister Israel Katz called "the first time in the world that a high-power laser interception system has reached operational maturity." The 100-kilowatt directed-energy weapon represents a technological breakthrough that "changes the rules of the game," according to Katz.
Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with lasers supplied by Elbit Systems, Iron Beam successfully intercepted rockets, mortar shells, and drones during extensive testing at the Shdema range in southern Israel. The system engages targets at the speed of light across ranges from hundreds of meters to several kilometers, destroying threats by burning them with concentrated laser energy.
Economic and Tactical Game-Changer
Iron Beam’s main advantage is cost. Rafael says the system has an effectively unlimited magazine as long as power is available and an almost zero cost per intercept, while conventional interceptor missiles can cost tens of thousands of dollars each. Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram said the delivery marked “only the beginning of the technological revolution” and would improve both Israel’s defensive capability and the cost balance between threats and interceptors
The system is being integrated into Israel’s multi-layered air-defense array as a complementary short-range layer alongside Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow. Rafael CEO Yoav Turgeman called it “the most advanced laser system in the world for intercepting aerial threats,” while IAF chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar described the handover as “especially moving” and said it adds “another vital component” to Israel’s air-defense battle.
Booming Defense-Tech Sector
Israel’s defense-technology sector is experiencing unprecedented growth across multiple specialized firms. Five main defense-tech companies are powering this market shift.
A March 9, 2026 Calcalist Tech market roundup highlighted five listed defense-related firms drawing investor attention. Elbit Systems, which supplied the lasers for Iron Beam, surged 21.7% in a single week, with its market capitalization reaching approximately $43.5 billion and a 165.9% one-year gain. NextVision, which produces ultra-lightweight stabilized cameras known as “The Eyes of the Drone,” recorded a 352.5% one-year increase.
SmartShooter, developer of AI-powered fire control systems that transform standard rifles into counter-drone weapons, surged 11.5% following its March 2026 IPO. Xtend, which creates operating systems allowing soldiers to pilot drones using VR goggles, is targeting a $1.5 billion valuation in its upcoming NASDAQ merger. Ondas, which owns Israeli drone company Airobotics, has publicized Airobotics’ Gulf-region activity and autonomous drone infrastructure work for public-safety, homeland-security, and industrial applications.

The Iron Beam’s operational deployment signals Israel’s transition from developing experimental laser technology to mass-producing battlefield-ready directed-energy systems that are reshaping air defense economics globally.
