Doctors Without Borders Spreads Disinformation About Israel (Again)
The organization's Bias and Alleged Ties to Islamic Jihad Undermine Its Credibility on Gaza and Israel
Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF), a globally recognized humanitarian organization, released its report titled “Gaza: Life in a Death Trap” in December 2024, claiming that living conditions in Gaza are dire. However, their claims are suspect due to documented ties of at least one MSF doctor to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist, which raises serious concerns about MSF’s neutrality and whether their operations may indirectly support militant activities.
The Case of Fadi al-Wadiya
Among the most damning revelations is the case of Fadi al-Wadiya, described by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as an “operative in the PIJ terrorist organization who was involved in the development and advancement of the organization’s missile array.” Al-Wadiya, who was killed in a drone strike in Gaza City, had also worked in a clinic run by MSF. According to the IDF, his expertise in electronics and chemistry played a key role in advancing PIJ’s missile capabilities.
MSF’s Ongoing Ties to Terrorists
Reports from NGO Monitor highlight MSF’s history of disregarding the impact of Gaza-launched rocket attacks on Israeli civilians while focusing exclusively on Palestinian casualties. This selective reporting mirrors the narratives promoted by Hamas and PIJ, which use international attention on civilian suffering to deflect from their own governance failures and militant actions.
Further, the Australia/Israel Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC), covered how MSF’s rhetoric often aligns with Hamas propaganda. MSF has repeatedly blamed the “criminal blockade” by Israel and Egypt for Gaza’s plight, while omitting how Hamas diverts critical resources, including international aid, toward military infrastructure like tunnels and weapon stockpiles.
A Flawed Narrative
MSF’s “Gaza: Life in a Death Trap” presents a one-sided account of the crisis. As noted by Alain Destexhe, a Gatestone Institute fellow and former secretary general of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the organization fails to condemn Hamas’s war crimes, such as using civilians as human shields, while focusing blame exclusively on Israel. This selective narrative disregards evidence of Hamas’s exploitation of aid and medical facilities, such as Al Shifa Hospital, for military purposes. MSF’s unwillingness to acknowledge these violations raises serious concerns about its objectivity and potential complicity.
The Need for Accountability
To preserve its mission and reputation, MSF must take immediate steps to sever ties with individuals or entities connected to terrorism. This includes thorough vetting of personnel and operations to ensure resources are strictly used for humanitarian purposes. Additionally, MSF must adopt a balanced narrative that addresses all dimensions of the Gaza conflict, including the destructive roles played by Hamas and PIJ.
Without transparency and accountability, MSF risks losing credibility and enabling the suffering it aims to alleviate. Donors and the international community must demand stricter oversight to prevent humanitarian aid from being exploited for terrorist agendas.
